This conference is approved by the Ordre des psychologues du Québec for 6 hours of continuing education units (CEU) in psychotherapy. No OPQ: RA04521-22.

The conference

Whether implicitly or explicitly, we, psychotherapists, all operate with theories – assumptions about how things work, informed by our personal history and experience, our professional training and reading, and our clinical experience. The assumptions we make about human motivation and behavior lead us to distinct ways of understanding what is wrong with our patients and what they need from us. Theory gives us a way to organize data without which we would have no way to understand the myriad of information and possibilities inherent in any human interaction.

What we glean from the history of psychoanalysis is that these assumptions change over time. Therefore, any psychoanalytic theory needs to be contextualized in its historical period. In self psychology, starting with Kohut and elaborated by many people who followed, we have gone, among other changes, from a theory of drives to a theory of relational connections and attachment; from a model of intrapsychic conflict to a developmental model whose goal is forming a cohesive, vital self; from self as structure or functions to self as organizations of experience; and from a one person to a two person view of the treatment process. Our current literature is replete with articles and books describing these changes.

In this program, Dr Gardner will organize her presentation around two themes: 1) what are the implications of these theoretical shifts? How do we translate them into practice? 2) Amidst all these changes, what remains constant? What of the original and basic concepts of self psychology and intersubjectivity theory continue to be central guideposts for our work? In some ways, recent developments lead to profound changes in how we think about what we do. In others, we might say, “Plus ça change, plus c’est pareil” – the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Most central to Kohut’s original formulations were the concept of selfobject experience and transference and the role of empathy in the treatment process. As part of her discussion of the continuities in theory, Dr Gardner will discuss some of the subtleties and complexities of how these concepts play out in our clinical work through multiple clinical vignettes. Central to her own understanding of both what people suffer from and how as therapists we need to frame our interventions, she will take up and elaborate the more recent emphasis on the development of a sense of agency and the role of forward edge interpretations. Our guest speaker this year, Dr Gardner, is well known for her ability to translate complex theoretical concepts in clear and intelligible language and we cordially invite you to come hear her.

Please Note: To preserve and respect both intellectual property rights and confidentiality, the conference will not be recorded, nor is recording permitted.

*The speaker

Jill Gardner, Ph.D., is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Chicago, Illinois. Over nearly five decades of practice, she has been extensively involved in the education and training of clinicians of all disciplines, through graduate level university courses, continuing professional education workshops, inservice programs in community settings, private study groups, and 20 years in a teaching hospital based-community mental health center. Throughout all these settings, her focus has been on enabling clinicians to understand how the theoretical concepts of Self Psychology and Intersubjective Systems Theory can be translated into their clinical work, bridging the gap between theory and practice. She is known for her ability to translate complex theoretical ideas into clear and understandable language. Dr. Gardner has published a number of articles applying self psychological ideas, especially to clinical supervision and brief psychotherapy. She is a member of the Executive Board of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP) and an Associate Editor of Psychonalysis, Self and Context.

In this short video, Jill introduces the main theme she will develop at this conference: Jill Gardner's invitation.

  4. Formulate illustrative examples of forward edge interpretations.

COVID-related measures

We are unfortunately still in the situation of a COVID-19 pandemic and the GEI is concerned about the health and safety of the participants who will be present on site for this activity. We are monitoring the evolution of the pandemic situation and we will adopt the directives as well as the health recommendations issued by the public health authorities at the time of the activity.

Participants may at any time change their in-person participation registration to an online participation registration. This modification will be made with full reimbursement of the fee difference for requests received by Saturday, September 3, 2022. After this date, modification of registration will still be possible but without the possibility of reimbursement (due to the hotel reservations deadline).

Sanitary measures at the Nouvel Hôtel

  • Hydro-alcoholic gel dispensers and a box of procedure masks will be placed at the entrance of the room at the disposal of the participants.
  • The conference room has centralized ventilation and air conditioning.
  • The "school" style arrangement will include two chairs per table (rather than the usual arrangement of three chairs per table) thus creating a distance of one meter between the participants.

Reminder

  • Sanitary restrictive measures have been lifted, but public health authorities are maintaining several general recommendations to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
  • Those that affect us as participants during this conference day include hand washing and disinfection, distancing at one meter, and wearing a mask when this distancing is not possible.

GEI recommandations

  • Following these recommendations, the GEI suggests that participants wear a mask when circulating, in particular when helping yourself at the breakfast or snacks table, and when queuing for the dinner buffet.
  • We also suggest that you maintain physical distancing with other participants unless they have signaled that they are comfortable with closer contact and/or physical contact.
  • If you are showing symptoms of COVID, please contact us to change your registration to participate on Zoom (see terms above).

Live streaming of the conference

Zoom Webinar:
For the live streaming of the conference, the GEI uses the Zoom Webinar platform (using the same software as in Zoom Meetings but with a slightly different user interface). We recommend using the Zoom software installed on a computer (PC or Mac) for it's easier use, but it is also possible to use the Zoom application installed on a tablet or smartphone (Android or iOS). However, we do not recommend using Zoom from your browser. We also recommend that you update your Zoom app before the activity takes place. In the event of a failure or instability of your internet connection, it is possible to connect to the Zoom webinar by telephone to obtain an audio channel only.

Zoom connection:
A Zoom connection link is required to join a GEI activity on Zoom. This connection link will be sent to participants by email on the Wednesday preceding the activity and a reminder will be sent one hour before the activity. Attendees will also receive a detailed guide on how to log in.

Participation on Zoom:
The detailed guide that will be sent to participants also contains all the information on how to participate in an activity taking place on Zoom. This guide includes setting up simultaneous interpretation if applicable, preference of display, and how to participate in the question period by writing your question or comment, etc.

Free wireless internet access at Le Nouvel Hôtel

The network name and password will be displayed at the entrance of the conference room. N.B. This Internet connection is shared by all hotel guests and may not be sufficient for use requiring a lot of bandwidth.
