The conference
We can no longer ignore how the world impacts us, our patients and ourselves, even behind the closed doors of our consulting rooms. While it is a world filled by wonderful opportunities for many, it is also replete with oppression and terror for others. From a contemporary relational psychoanalytic perspective, Doris Brothers work offers us a deep understanding of the emergence and the transformation of human experience, including trauma and its intergenerational transmission, within its multiple relational contexts.

Bullies Close to Home
Who is the victim? Who is the perpetrator? Who is bullied? Who is the bully? Who am I? In this presentation Dr Brothers will attempt to illustrate the roots of bullying in intergenerational trauma by referring to her relational systems concept of “traumatic attachments" and by examining the extent to which Freud’s life and thought reflect themes of bullying as a response to the traumatizing anti-Semitism that pervaded his family’s history. She will then briefly describe her work with a woman whose experiences of being the victim of bullying may be traced back to her grandparents’ generation.

War, Peace and Promise-Making: Becoming a Late-Life Activist
In this presentation, Dr Brothers will discuss the effect of two wars on her life: World War II and the war in Viet Nam. Then she will discuss the complexities involved in relinquishing the role of silent bystander in the analytic space as well as on the world stage through an examination of the concept of promise-making. A clinical example will illustrate how the complicated and demanding process of making and keeping promises affected a therapeutic process.

The Impact of Culture, Immigration and Language on the Sense of Belonging: Akela’s Homesickness
This presentation will focus on the complex ways in which language contributes to the subjective sense of belonging and not belonging, of feeling accepted and welcome vs. rejected and excluded. Dr Brothers will describe her therapeutic relationship with a woman who immigrated to the United States from Egypt as a child. Because she first treated her and her husband in couples therapy before she began work with her in individual treatment, the case also offers an opportunity to reflect on the relative roles of these two modalities in the overall effectiveness of therapy.

* The presenter

Doris Brothers, Ph.D. (link to her web site) is a psychologist/psychoanalyst, and a co-Founder of the Training and Research in Intersubjective Self Psychology Foundation (TRISP). She is co-editor with Roger Frie of the International Journal of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology and chief editor of eForum, the online newsletter of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP). She is Secretary of IAPSP and serves on its council, executive and advisory boards. She has presented her work at many professional conferences throughout the United States and abroad. Her books include: Toward a Psychology of Uncertainty: Trauma-Centered Psychoanalysis (2008), Falling Backwards: An Exploration of Trust and Self-Experience (1995), and, with Richard Ulman, The Shattered Self: A Psychoanalytic Study of Trauma (1988). Dr. Brothers chaired the committee that organized the 2011 multi-disciplinary conference entitled Bystanders No More: Psychotherapeutic Dialogues for the Politically Silenced. She is in private practice in Manhattan, New York, USA.

This article summarizes very well the thinking of Doris Brothers and it's evolution. We recommend it's (download and) reading, though it is not necessary for a good understanding of the conference.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

Identify the ways in which intergenerational trauma leads to the creation of such dualities as victim/perpretrator and bullied/bully which impede the development of a sense of belonging.
Describe the traumatic attachment patterns that are associated with the intergenerational transmission of bullying.
Explain how compassion leads to healing for those who experience themselves as both perpetrator and victim.
Increase awareness of how culture, migration, language, and other external factors impact the sense of belonging.

Refund policy

Registration cancellations in writing, up to Saturday one week before the conference, will be refunded less a 25$ administration charge. Please address your request to the GEI treasurer. We regret that no refunds can be allowed after that date. For more information on the general registration modalities, please refer to the Modalités d'inscription aux activités du GEI.

Please first complete online your GEI membership application. Following your membership application, you will immediately receive an automated email confirming your application. As soon as your payment is completed, you will receive a second email of (Confirmation de votre paiement). From then, your member status will give you access to member's reduced fees for your next registrations to an activity of that membership year.

If you choose to pay online, the payment confirmation email will be received immediately.
If you choose to pay by mail, allow an additional week before the payment confirmation email.

Your receipt is the GEI - Confirmation de votre paiement email (don't use the GEI - Registration notification email, which is not printer-friendly). If you don't have this email anymore, please follow these steps:
