In the fall of 2003, a group of professors, supervisors, and former students from the counselling psychology section of the Université de Montréal (Québec, Canada) joined with other psychologists from various backgrounds in order to fulfill their need for continuing education and professional affiliation with colleagues sharing an intersubjective systems sensibility. Closely related to the basic premises of existential-humanistic psychology, the intersubjective systems theory is part of the evolution of a body of theoretical and clinical knowledge developed, in particular, by psychoanalytic self psychology and Relational psychoanalysis in the United States.

Thus was formed the Groupe d’étude sur l’intersubjectivité (GEI), which has the purpose of fostering theoretical and clinical development for psychotherapists interested in this approach. At the GEI, we believe that participation in a professional community is important to ensure the continuing development of our therapeutic abilities. It is also our conviction that psychotherapists having different approaches can find in intersubjectivity theory an added sensibility to the relational dimension central to all forms of psychotherapy.
